Baghdad's House of Wisdom drives a translation century
Under the Abbasids, scholars in Baghdad translated Greek, Persian, Syriac and Sanskrit works into Arabic and pushed the sciences far beyond their sources.
Why it matters
The greatest translation-and-research program of the Middle Ages: algebra, optics, medicine and astronomy advanced on its benches. Much of ancient Greek learning survives only because it passed through here.
