The Ptolemies built an institution with one aim: collect every scroll in the known world, copy it, and fund scholars to work beside it.

Why it matters

Alexandria invented organized research: acquisition, curation, editorial criticism and full-time scholarship. Its rise and long decay remain the standing parable of what concentrated knowledge can do — and what losing it costs.
