Zhuangzi's butterfly dream

Zhuangzi's parable — did he dream he was a butterfly, or is a butterfly dreaming it is him? — made perspective and the limits of certainty playful and profound.

Why it matters

A rigorously skeptical yet joyful philosophy: reality may not match our categories, and that is an invitation to flexibility, not despair. It remains one of the sharpest early probes of the self and reality.
