Roads, aqueducts, concrete, sewers and standardized coinage: Rome's infrastructure ran from Britain to Syria, engineered to a shared specification.
Why it matters
Rome demonstrated infrastructure as an operating system for empire — the physical network (roads, water) and the protocol layer (law, coinage, citizenship) that let a pre-industrial state scale. Its roads carried Rome's fall, too.
