The Stockton & Darlington ran in 1825; by 1830 the Liverpool & Manchester — won by Stephenson's Rocket at Rainhill — showed steam rail as a business.
Why it matters
Railways compressed travel time more than anything since the horse, forced standardized time onto unwilling towns, and created the first big corporations. The passenger era of speed begins here.
