Intel's 4004 packed a complete CPU — 2,300 transistors — onto one chip, built for a Japanese calculator and priced accordingly.
Why it matters
When the processor became a commodity part, computing power began doubling on schedule for half a century. The datacenter and the phone in your pocket are the same object at different scales.
