Amazon opened its S3 storage and EC2 compute services to anyone with a credit card — infrastructure as a self-service API.

Why it matters

The cloud turned computing into a utility you provision in minutes, collapsing the startup cost of building at scale. Datacenters, virtualization and operations — a whole profession's landscape — reorganized around it.
